Storyboard

For our film trailer, our group decided to open with 'Once upon a time'. This is typical of a fairytale, romantic genre and therefore shows this to the audience. We decided to this written in scrpt writing on a plain backgroud, however we then agreed to have the writing on a storybook with the storybook then placed on a enchanted forest backgroud emphasising the fairytale theme even more. After this shot, a shot of an empty school corridor would appear as the establishing shot. This shows our idea of bringing a modern theme to final piece and conveys the setting to the target audience and this is then an environment they would be familiar with. Following this would be a close up of a school bell which again establishes the setting. We then decided to show a medium shot of each 'Princess' showing the audience of the kind of characters within the film but also bringing a variety of shot to the piece. We would show through these shots the friendship between these 3 girls and the lifestyle they have intwinded with captions such a 'They were the girls everyone wanted to be', this will show elements of typical teenage live bringing a sense of familiarity to the audience. Another caption will then follow 'untill' drawing in the audiences attention as they would want to know what would happen next.
Following this would be the first shot of 'Prince Charming'. we decided to use a close up to show what caused these 3 girls friendship to be destroyed. We then chose to show a wider variety of shots showing how the 3 girls fight for the attention of this guy and what extents they will go to to get it. 'This summer' this would be another caption showing when this film would be released however not giving a specific date so then the audience will be more eager to fnd out when the film is out.
Throughout the trailer we decided to show each 'Princess' falling infront of or into the 'Prince' bringing the comical element to the trailer that we have found to be in most modernised fairytales. Other shots following this would be reactions from the girls when they see the 'Prince' with one of the other girls and short snappy shots of what they plan to do as revenge, drawing the viewer in even more.
'He's Mine' the title of the film will then appear, relieving the tension that has built up within the trailer. We decided on this title as it is short and memorable and still keeps curiousity. The final caption will be 'who will get thier happily ever after' this shows the consistancy we have kept to show our fairytale theme and again leaving the audience eager to see the film to see what happens next and if any of the girls finally get their happily ever after.

Development

We used 3 girls and a boy in the sixth form at our school including me, ashley and charlotte within our group as the main 'princess' for this trailer, poster and magazine cover. Deciding on the Princess we had to look at typical fairytale and modern rom com film. For example, the girls in our group all have different colour hair this was a constant element with in a range of rom coms and fairytales each with our different contrasting looks. Having us as the main characters of the trailer helped majorly with the scheduling and filming.

'The Princess'

'The Prince'

We used Matt as our 'Prince' as he fits the stereotyprical Prince charming as he is tall with dark hair and dark eyes. He fits with the modern day 'heartthrob' and with all these elements would capture the target audiences attention.

Our Plot

The storyline for our trailers is a very simple one however follows a typical fairytale storyline. Three best friends become ememies over the same boy 'prince charming'. These three girls are typical teenage girls that are seen in typical rom com films, they are girls every guy wants to date and who every girl want to be. Thoughout the trailer we see girls fight for the love and attention of this boy. We give certain hints to who the winning girl is.

Using essential pieces that are consistant to all rom com trailers, we showed how typical girls deal with the situation and focus on the girls attitudes towards eachother and how they will win 'prince charming'. However we didnt want to give to much away to the audience.

Levi - Strauss' Theory

Levi - Strauss is most noted for his theory of Binary Oppositions.
- In order to find the opposition, Levi - strauss was less in...

  • Syntagmatic relations i.e how events line up in the narrative structure to develop the plot.
Than...

  • Paradigmatic relations i.e those events and features that belong to the themes of the piece especially within the genre based texts.
Levi - Strauss used the 'Western' films genre to develop his theory of Binary Oppositions.

For example...

Homesteaders        -        Native American
Christians               -        Pagan
Domestic               -        Savage
Weak                    -        Strong
Garden                  -        Wilderness
Inside society         -        Outside society

Barthes Theory

Barthe believes that there are 5 action codes that enable and audience to make sense of a narrative.

  • HERENEUTIC (narrative turning points) We know where the story will go next.
  • PROAIRETIC (Basic narrative actions) E.g. Detective interviews, suspect of femme fatale suduces hero (see Propp's 31 functions)
  • CULTURAL (Prior social knowledge) E.g. Our attitude to gender and racial stereotypes.
  • SEMIC (Medium - related code) Intertextuality.
  •  SYMBOLIC (Themes) Iconography or a theme such a 'image versus reality' (Curtis Hanson)

Todorov Thoery

Todorov developed the theory of disrupted equilibrium. He identified that stories follow a typical pattern of:

  • Equilibrium -  the status quo - where things are as they should be
  • Disequilibrium - the status quo is disrupted by an event
  • Equilibrium - is restored at the end of the story by the actions of the hero
There can  be several moments in the plot where resolution of the equilibrium takes place. (For example, when pieces of a detectives puzzle falls into place)
Todorov later developed this into a 5 stage pattern:
  1. A state of equilibrium at the outset
  2. A disruption of the equilibrium by some action
  3. A recognition that there has been a disruption
  4. An attempt to repair the disruption
  5. A reinstatement of the equilibrium
